What is backspace on a Custom Wheel?

Backspace is the distance from the mounting surface of the wheel and the back edge of the wheel. (Mounting surface is the surface of the wheel that touches the hub of the vehicle.)   Backspace is always expressed in inches.  The smaller the backspace is the deeper the wheel lip will be which means the wheel will stick out more on the vehicle.  A wheel with larger backspace will be flush and may have no lip at all like those on front wheel drive cars.

Below is a diagram showing how to measure backspace on a front wheel drive wheel which has a large backspace.
